Routines and Structures of Daily Life
Life sure is mundane. After hitting snooze on the alarm clock a couple of times, you finally drag yourself out of bed, jump in the shower, and you’re out the door by 8 a.m. determined to shake off the habitual Monday morning blues.
You pick up a latte and muffin from the same vendor, catch the same train that drops you off two blocks from the same office building you’ve worked at for the last 10 years. And it’s not that you necessarily hate the job, after all, it’s easy on the brain and it pays the bills, but the tedious routine is excruciating.
You look forward to the weekend, however, meeting up with your old buddies from college. A few drinks and a night out on the town is just what you need to break the 9 to 5 monotony. Yet as you guzzle down another pint amidst the noise and the blaze of the neon lights, you can’t ignore a nagging agitation signaling a familiar mood. A kind of quiet discontentment bubbling away just beneath the surface. A subtle sense of going through the motions and not going anywhere at all.
The routines and structures of daily life are a normal and necessary part of the human journey. From the moment you wake up, to the moment you nod off at night, structures, schedules, plans, routines, and order, are the necessary evils of the daily grind. But there are some evils that are not just necessary, they are also the fundamental imperatives, that build forward-moving momentum and habits, for a happy and successful life. Life is greatly improved with these structures and routines.
You Will Find Your Passion
However, if you’re not careful, living in this way can program your mind to be overly rigid and cautious. To see the world strictly through lenses of what is safe, predictable, and secure. To experience life only within parameters of what is known, expected, and conventional. And gravitate toward the things that are comfortable and convenient. Your subconscious mind subscribes you to the station of colorless, boring, and dull.
And while comfort and convenience, and security can be seductively appealing, they can also kill passion and crush your natural and creative flair.
You learn by doing and grow by complete engagement in the moment. You are not on the periphery but fully immersed in the heart and soul of life. When you engage in this way, somewhere along the road, you will find your passion. And finding your passion is exhilarating. It excites the heck out of you and you can’t wait to get each day started. Life rarely gets boring or dull because your entire energy is focused on a plan, a goal, or an activity that is greater and more compelling than yourself.
A bold mission that makes you feel alive. means everything to you, that you love and enjoy, do willingly, freely, and with endless enthusiasm. It is profoundly meaningful to you, and you can easily spend hours in deep, uninterrupted flow, before realizing that it got dark outside already, or that you missed lunch or your best friend’s phone call.
Your passion is a statement to the world that you’ve found your life’s purpose, that all along… was lying deep within. You are driven by an energy that no matter what, will see you through to the end.
Passion takes you on the ultimate voyage of discovery, enriching, energizing, and creating enthusiasm in your life.
Let’s work with these 5 questions to boost your energy and feel more engaged.
- What energizes me in my life? When do I feel most passionate and enthusiastic? (Make a list)
- Which of my goals energize me? If not, what would energize me?
- What drains my 1). Mental and 2). physical energy? (Make two lists)
- Where is there a source of energy inside me that never dries up?
- What steps could I take to feel energized and passionate about my life?
Ponder these questions over the week ahead. Journal around them to go deeper.
JOURNALING
Your deepest thoughts and emotions, troubling issues that keep you up at night, and some of the greatest highlights and achievements of the day deserve a space in your journal. When life gets challenging and overwhelming, use journaling to make sense of events or situations and to organize them objectively in your mind. Get clear about where you are, where you want to be and the process of getting there with regular journaling. Journaling improves your quality of life and supports your health and well-being. So Journal like a colonel, like it matters, like you matter, like you mean it and make it a serious priority in your life.
With grace and gratitude
