Life’s Most Precious Commodity

Prioritize what matters. If you don’t set priorities, the important goals get lost among the less important ones. Before you know it the whole day has gone by, a week has gone by, a month a year, 5-years, and you end up just as stuck as you were on day one.

Often, we give our time away too freely to everybody else and to things that are low-priority or have little value in terms of the overall vision we set for our lives. We don’t appreciate that time is life’s most precious commodity. But it’s not just time, it’s how we prioritize the time that makes the difference between success and failure and ensures that we reach the destination, without all the detours, deviations, and distractions.

You recently noticed that your clothes are getting tighter and tighter but you’ve been so busy lately, it kind of just slipped your mind…until you remembered the college reunion. All that squeezing and stretching is not going to get you into that sexy new dress you bought last year. Cue: It’s time to sign up for a gym membership.

You’re all excited, you’ve even set some goals. This time next year you will get into that dress! You’ve scheduled some gym sessions this week, the first one Monday at 5.30 but just as you’re leaving the house, Brenda calls dying to talk about Saturday’s episode of Squid Game. You’re hooked and spend the next 3 hours chatting with your best friend. She picks you up on Tuesday to eat dinner downtown. Wednesday she needs a favor and of course, you oblige. Thursday, it’s girl’s night and you can’t miss that. Friday, it’s been a long week, and all you really want to do is curl with a Cabernet Sauvignon and binge on your favorite classics for the rest of the night.

Finally the weekend, the kids, cooking, hubby, housework, Brenda all take you further and further away from YOUR priority of going to the gym.

YOUR values and priorities have taken a back seat to everybody else’s demands. You’ve succumbed to distractions and procrastination has won out over your priorities. You have not given any attention to the goals or the vision you’ve set for your life.

When we live our values and prioritize what truly matters – this is success in life.

Let’s look at these 5 questions – to prioritize what matters to you.

  1. What are my top five priorities in life? (Make a list)
  2. What matters more to me than anything else?
  3. In what area of my life do I need a tune-up to realign with my priorities?
  4. What gets in the way of me truly living my priorities? (Make a list)
  5. What could I do differently? What could I say “no” to so that I build my life around what matters most?

Ponder these questions over the week ahead then choose one action to move forward with.

JOURNALING

Journal, journal, journal and make it a priority, because it matters, YOU matter. Get to know yourself deeply, from the inside. Connect to your values and align with your power and purpose. Keep track of your personal growth journey and celebrate your progress regularly. Make journaling an integral part of your self-care plan and remember it is ALWAYS about YOU!
